Live Music - Sunday the 3rd of November

Following the success of the previous gig by Sweet Water on the Labour Day Weekend, the boys from Sweet Water are back again at Flyfaire Wines Cellar Door for some more excellent live music.  As well, not to mention another scrumptious BBQ on the Deck, which is always delicious!  It will be a perfect start to the Melbourne Cup Week which will kick-off this Saturday (the 2nd of November).

The BBQ on the deck menu will feature the Flyfaire favourites with fillet or porterhouse steaks, grain fed chicken breast, salmon fillets or the vegetarian option - Les's special garlic mushrooms. Dessert is also available with cakes, scones, coffee and tea to finish.

BBQ on the Deck is our feature event during the warmer months, so come and join us on our fabulous deck for some good food and great wine, all of which promises to please. Check out our events page for all of the details.

Mounding the new Carménère Block

Following our Winemaker's (Les) recent trip to Chile, he took some inspirations from one of the world's leading New World wine producers and has decided to plant a new variety at Flyfaire, the red Carménère grape.  Originally this grape was from the Médoc region in Bordeaux, France - which was named because of it's crimson colour of its leaves in Autumn ("carmin" is crimson in French).  Now rarely found in France, it was transported to Chile where Chilean winemakers have really made it their own, being the largest producers worldwide.

Les and Julianne, featured on the video are preparing the block for planting by mounding the ground up to allow the vines to be planted into the earth.

Watch Les and Julianne from Flyfaire prepare the block for the new variety with this 1.5 minute video on our YouTube channel. Make sure you watch out for the post!

2.9°C in the Chardonnay Block

Given recent phenomenon with strange weather all around the world (e.g.: fires in NSW & frosts in SE NSW), it is increasingly difficult for vineyards to manage these inconsistent temperature changes.  One of our biggest fears with the weather is a late frost in early spring.

To combat this when we receive a frost warning, we prepare wood fire barrels and proceed to light them when the mercury drops.  The fire barrels in the vineyard produce enough warm air (we hope) that can then circulate around the vineyard to protect the fragile spring foliage. You can see in this photo here that the mercury hit 2.9°C, whilst at ground level we recorded 0.5°C at around 5.30am in the morning.  A long night's work, but worth to save the 2014 vintage.

Frosts hit the Riverina region, Young, and Orange, and even to parts of the Hunter Valley on the 18th of October.  The damage done by these frosts just for the Riverina region could total as much as 20 per cent of their crop, or the equivalent of 60 million bottles of wine. Regional farmgate losses alone should total about $18 million.
