BIOBLITZ - Woomargama, NSW with One Week to go! Flyfaire Open for Dinner & Afternoon Tea!

Original Post: 30th of August, 2013

This year's Slopes to Summit (S2S) is shaping up to an excellent event with a lot of fun for those of all ages.  The BioBlitz is being held in the landscape surrounding Woomargama and Mullengandra areas on the 6th/7th/8th September.

A BioBlitz is a fun and informative event which aims to bring scientists and  the general community together over a brief period of time to survey local wildlife.

This free event is being organised by the S2S partnership of the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, with support from a number of local organisations and community groups, including the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Woomargama National Park Volunteers.

The BioBlitz will involve a series of wildlife surveys lead by ecologists from Charles Sturt University, Australian National University, Murray Catchment Management Authority, University of Melbourne, NSW Department of Primary Industries, and Nature Conservation Trust.  The surveys will be conducted in the landscape between the Woomargama National Park and Benambra Nature Reserve, and will include these reserves, crown reserves, and a hand full of private properties including Woomargama Station.

The event will be a fun and hands-on opportunity to find and learn about the region’s unique birds, reptiles, fish, frogs, plants and mammals including bats and squirrel gliders.  We may even find the ellusive Tiger Quoll.

The event will showcase the following events:

  • Friday 10am – 2:30pm is a “Schools-only” session.  Five local schools have already registered so other schools are urged to get involved as well.
  • Friday 3pm – Sunday 3pm is open to the general public.  Survey activity will generally run from 7am to around 7pm, with individual surveys lasting for around 2 hours each.

The Woomargama Community Hall will serve as the base during the event. Before participating in surveys please come to the Community Hall to register and find out all the relevant details.

Free camping will be available at the Community Hall grounds, as well as in Woomargama National Park (Samuel Bollard Camping Ground).

There will be free live music with Kissin’ Cousins at the Woomargama Pub on Saturday night (8pm ‘til late), a great reason to kick the heels off after time spent wandering through this beautiful landscape.

In addition to surveying for wildlife, we will be hosting talks, walks and demonstrations, as well as kids environmental activities.

Another reason to come along is for the Nature Photography Workshop – which is another really exciting aspect of this year’s BioBlitz and is being run by award winning photographer Esther Beaton.  The four hour workshop is being held on the Saturday (1-5pm) and will be conducted in the Woomargama National Park.  Places are strictly limited so bookings are essential by emailing sam@nct.org.au. The workshop will cost $25/person and payment will be required before the event to reserve your spot.  Spaces are running out so if you are interested hurry!

Flyfaire Wines will also be open during the whole weekend with a dinner option available on the Friday and Saturday nights including a buffet roast option, Sri-Lankan Dhal and kids menu.  Furthermore, we are open during the day for afternoon tea, wine tasting or just wondering around our beautiful surrounds in the throbbing heart of the BioBlitz activity of the Woomargama National Park.

We hope to see you at this year’s BioBlitz!
