Flyfaire Wins Silver at the NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne & Les (Business Director & Winemaker) at the academy awards themed night for the NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne & Les (Business Director & Winemaker) at the academy awards themed night for the NSW Tourism Awards

This past Thursday (Nov. 26th), Julianne and Les, our Business Director and Winemaker, attended the  NSW Tourism Awards in Darling Habour, Sydney. We are delighted to say that we won the Silver Award on the night!

The NSW Tourism Awards are held every year to acknowledge excellence in tourism for all of New South Wales tourism areas.

The team from Flyfaire are thrilled to have made the finals and we were expecting a tough night with high standards of competition. When the results were announced, we were thoroughly thrilled to have won the Silver Award. This is a huge achievement for the team and reflects how far we've come on our journey.

The  NSW Tourism Awards is a fantastic way to develop tourism in the Murray region, as well as for NSW. The awards also helps to recognise independent operators that are providing wonderful tourism experiences.

Margan Wines took the gold award and also entered the Hall of Fame (winners three years running). Hungerford Hill Wines and Bimbadgen Winery (runner-up in 2014) were also great competitors which definitely made the decision tough for the judges on the night in the category Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries. The Greater Hume Shire Visitor Information Centre was also a finalist at the  NSW Tourism Awards, which is in the same area as Flyfaire.

Flyfaire recently won the Gold Award at the Inland Tourism Awards in Broken Hill in July of this year. Read about the post for the Inland Tourism Awards here.

Local Vietnamese children celebrating the moon festival. The charity brought along a small truck load of goodies for these beautiful kids and lots of fun was had by one and all!

Bill McDonald, a local farmer from Mullengandra and patron of Flyfaire Wines, recently went to Vietnam to raise money for a local charity called Only Rice Is Not Enough. Bill and other Albury Rotarians travelled together for the charity event.

Bill and the local Rotarians were asked to bring items of interest from their local community to auction in Vietnam and help raise funds for the charity. Flyfaire donated a bottle of our Riesling for the event which was subsequently auctioned for USD$50 following the story of Flyfaire being told at the auction.

Only Rice Is Not Enough is a local charity in Vietnam whose moto is “A Dime For A Meal to the little kid. Not much, but everyday”. To find out more and like them on Facebook - click here.

The NSW Roads and Maritime service recently installed four fabulous highway signs in mid-October, indicating Flyfaire's turn-off on the Hume Highway (Motorway 31 or M31). It is now much easier to find us with the signs clearly indicating the turn-off from the highway.

Flyfaire Takes the Gold at Inland Tourism Awards

Last July, Julianne and Les, our Business Director and Winemaker, hit the road to attend the Inland Tourism Awards at Broken Hill.

The Inland Tourism Awards are held every year to acknowledge excellence in tourism in the four Victorian and New South Wales regional tourism areas of Central, Inland, Murray and Riverina.

The team from Flyfaire were thrilled to have made the finals and we weren't expecting too much given the stiff competition.

We were totally surprised when the winner was announced and it was Flyfaire's name that was called. Our winemaker had this to say about the win:

“We put a lot of hard work into the submission and we’re delighted that it paid-off in such a big way. It really is such a fabulous surprise and great to be recognised for the hard work that we’ve put into our tourism experience.”
— Les, Flyfaire Winemaker

No rest for the wicked or so they say. Next, we've entered the NSW Tourism Awards with the finalists to be announced mid-October.

Wine Awards: Riesling Challenge, NSW Small Winemakers

Flyfaire 2015 Riesling packed and ready for Canberra Riesling Challenge

Flyfaire 2015 Riesling packed and ready for Canberra Riesling Challenge

We've had two wine competitions on the radar recently, including a bronze winning performance at the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show and entering our latest Riesling in the Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

At the 24th Annual NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show, our winemaker has again had success with our new Flyfaire 2014 "Jane in the Mist" Riesling which received a Bronze in the category "Blended Fortified Wine - Dry to Sweet" with the great score of 48.5 points.

The other wine competition we're participating in is the celebrated Canberra International Riesling Challenge, which attracts wines from Riesling producing countries from all around the world and is seen as one of the most significant events of its type in the southern hemisphere. Having entered the challenge, we will be competing with 500 other Riesling producers from across the world. The results are out Friday the 16th of October, 2015.

Colouring In for Adults and Dine on the Grapewine Event

This coming 29th of October, the Henty Library is hosting an event at Flyfaire where it's time for the adults to colour in (who said colouring in was just for the kids) and enjoy wine tasting at the same time.

The cost is only $5 bucks and it promises to be a social event. Bookings can be make by contacting skane@greaterhume.nsw.gov.au for details or you can always contact us at info@flyfaire.com (we will pass on your details).

Vintage 2015

Marty Yates visits Flyfaire from New Zealand

Marty Yates visits Flyfaire from New Zealand

The growing season started with a repetition of last year with frosts for the first few weeks in October, 2014. This presented a good opportunity to test the frost heater installed last year. Protecting the young shoots is critical at this time because any damage to a new shoot will result in the year’s crop being wiped out.

In November, 2014 Dr Graham Robertson from the Australian Antarctic Division; Hobart, Australia, arrived to spend a few days with us and just in time to help out with the planting of the last 2 rows of Carménère, to finish the block started in 2013.

Later in November, Bron and Marty Yates, friends of Les' from university days, spent a week with us, and again, just in time, to help with planting replacement Chardonnay vines. It’s wonderful to have friends that love to get their hands dirty. It seems that everyone that visits gets a job in the vineyard!

The season threw more challenges with stormy and humid weather as well as large temperature swings of over 20°C differentials during a 24 hour period. Tropical like fogs descended upon Flyfaire followed by the more traditional dry spells requiring irrigation of the vines.

The sulphur and copper organic sprays were applied early to the vineyard and maintained control of the mould for a short period. Outbreaks still occurred which were difficult to control. The leaf growth and fruit load on all varieties were outstanding, perhaps in part a result of the organic fertiliser applied (chicken manure) in 2012 followed by an application of prilled hydrated lime in 2013, all reaching deep into the root zone by 2015.

This season saw our first crop of grapes from the new "Don Pepe Carménère Block". How exciting to harvest a grape variety predominately grown in Chile. A small batch of 40 litres is now fermenting under the watchful eye of the  winemaker, Les.

On other news, last year we won our first medal awarded to our 2013 Merlot in the New South Wales Small Winemakers Show. We were overjoyed to achieve this recognition with it being the first time we have entered our Merlot in a competition. We have now sold out of this vintage, but we are looking forward to achieving further results with the 2014 vintage yet to be released.

This year’s picking has come 3 weeks early.  We are currently busy with a bumper crop (the best ever). The season tended to cause erratic Veraison which was difficult to predict, but flavours in all of the varieties are intense.

To add excitement to the harvest, NSW National Parks has done an early fuel reduction burn of the Woomargama National Park on the Tunnel Road on the 10th March, 2015 just opposite our vineyard.  We managed to harvest half the Merlot crop before smoke settled in. The other half may be affected by smoke taint, only after ferment will we know. We have survived two other fires in December, 2014 started by lightning.  The sound of the helicopter water bombers is becoming all too familiar.
