2016 NSW Small Winemakers Wine

Flyfaire has won bronze at the 2016 NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show held in Forbes, NSW. We entered our new line - Flyfaire 2016 Gold Chardonnay in the "CLASS 25 - Apera and Varietals or Blended Fortified Wine not covered by classes 26 or 27, Dry to Sweet" to win the bronze.

We also entered a number of other vintages which also scored well, but missed out on gaining any medals - including Flyfaire 2016 Merlot Rouge and our Flyfaire 2015 Merlot & Chardonnay. The judges' comments were limited, but they did say that "most of the wines have flavour and freshness" in the Dry White Table for our 2015 chardonnay. We'll take what we can get we guess!

We're a big supporter of the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show. We've entered many of our wines these past few years and have received positive feedback for our wines. We'll definitely be back in 2017!

Big Rains are Good for Vines & for Summer Water Retention

We've all being talking lately of the big rains that we've been having and with the Hume Weir (Lake Hume) at 99.51% (11 Nov. 2016), it's understandable.

For us at Flyfaire though, it's really good news as these early spring rains help our vines enormously. The rains for one help their spring growth after the winter dormant months. And, more importantly, they get them ready for the hot Aussie summer ahead by increasing water retention capacity. All good news to help us have a bummer 2017 crop!

The World Visits Flyfaire

With our recent sign on the Hume Hwy (M31), we have been receiving more and more international visitors. In response, we've put up a world map for when people enter. Visitors can place a pin to show where they're visiting from.

So far, we've had visitors from (as shown in gallery above) Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Nepal, Canada, Kuwait, India - to name a few. It makes for interesting tales as we get to hear about people's travels and share stories with them. We're pretty sure our map will have a diverse set of locations shortly and all the better as we get to meet super interesting folks with great stories!

Backpackers Lodging

Running a vineyard is a lot of work - from picking, to pruning, to pressing, to bottling - there are so many tasks that have to be done. So, we often have to rely on getting outside help so that all these tasks can get done.

Given Australia's youth visa program that allows people to stay up to 2 years (they can stay an extra year on top of the first year so long as they spend 3 months or so working in a rural community), backpackers are often perfect candidates to help out as they are often looking for work in rural communities.

Their contribution to rural and regional Australia cannot be understated as they often work in helping out businesses that can have difficulties in finding employees in these sometimes remote communities.

The team at Flyfaire has being building backpacker lodging to enable us to better accommodate backpacker guests who want to stay and work at Flyfaire. We hope to have these lodgings finished shortly, as we've found that many backpackers don't have accommodation (and often isn't feasible for 3 months) easily available. We're looking forward to their valuable help and hosting them - as well as hearing about their often interesting travels and stories!

Flyfaire 2014 Riesling - Les & Marty Review New Flyfaire Vintage

Les, our Winemaker and Marty visiting from New Zealand recently reviewed a 2014 Riesling. Marty immediately notes the "Woomaragama Smell" of lime / Citrus aromas - a very fragrant and complex wine.

Les notes the wine is crisp with the flavours of the oak coming through. Les also tells us that the wine has a pH of around 3.01 and 12% alcohol content.

The 2014 Riesling is not yet available in our Online Shop, but it should be very shortly.

All in all, a very interesting wine. We hope you enjoy this short video.

Julianne Talks About Entering the 2015 NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne recently recorded a video for new entrants into this year's NSW Tourism Awards. Take a moment to watch about what it's like to enter the awards as a first time entrant and the important things to remember when entering the awards, and most importantly, about having a go! We hope you enjoy this short video.

About the Awards

Flyfaire Wines Cellar Door and Café won the Silver Award in the "Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries" at the NSW Tourism Awards in 2015 at a gala event held at Darling Habour in Sydney, NSW.

The NSW Tourism Awards celebrates and acknowledges tourism businesses that have demonstrated outstanding achievement and success throughout the year. The Awards are a submission and inspection-based program and provide the opportunity to publicly recognise and showcase the State’s finest tourism operators. Flyfaire also won the Gold Award at the Inland Tourism Awards (now called the Regional Tourism Awards) in Broken Hill in July, 2015.

Honk-Honk the Goose's new Friends

We're pretty surprised this happened right after we shared a photo of lonesome Honk-Honk with you guys the other day (see below photo), but Honk-Honk, our lone goose, apparently made new friends!

We're really happy for Honk-Honk, as it's always great to have new friends and not be always on your lonesome. However, we now have a new problem. We need to name Honk-Honk's new friends!

So, if you've got any ideas, let us know in the comments or on Facebook.

Flyfaire Wins Silver at the NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne & Les (Business Director & Winemaker) at the academy awards themed night for the NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne & Les (Business Director & Winemaker) at the academy awards themed night for the NSW Tourism Awards

This past Thursday (Nov. 26th), Julianne and Les, our Business Director and Winemaker, attended the  NSW Tourism Awards in Darling Habour, Sydney. We are delighted to say that we won the Silver Award on the night!

The NSW Tourism Awards are held every year to acknowledge excellence in tourism for all of New South Wales tourism areas.

The team from Flyfaire are thrilled to have made the finals and we were expecting a tough night with high standards of competition. When the results were announced, we were thoroughly thrilled to have won the Silver Award. This is a huge achievement for the team and reflects how far we've come on our journey.

The  NSW Tourism Awards is a fantastic way to develop tourism in the Murray region, as well as for NSW. The awards also helps to recognise independent operators that are providing wonderful tourism experiences.

Margan Wines took the gold award and also entered the Hall of Fame (winners three years running). Hungerford Hill Wines and Bimbadgen Winery (runner-up in 2014) were also great competitors which definitely made the decision tough for the judges on the night in the category Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries. The Greater Hume Shire Visitor Information Centre was also a finalist at the  NSW Tourism Awards, which is in the same area as Flyfaire.

Flyfaire recently won the Gold Award at the Inland Tourism Awards in Broken Hill in July of this year. Read about the post for the Inland Tourism Awards here.

Local Vietnamese children celebrating the moon festival. The charity brought along a small truck load of goodies for these beautiful kids and lots of fun was had by one and all!

Bill McDonald, a local farmer from Mullengandra and patron of Flyfaire Wines, recently went to Vietnam to raise money for a local charity called Only Rice Is Not Enough. Bill and other Albury Rotarians travelled together for the charity event.

Bill and the local Rotarians were asked to bring items of interest from their local community to auction in Vietnam and help raise funds for the charity. Flyfaire donated a bottle of our Riesling for the event which was subsequently auctioned for USD$50 following the story of Flyfaire being told at the auction.

Only Rice Is Not Enough is a local charity in Vietnam whose moto is “A Dime For A Meal to the little kid. Not much, but everyday”. To find out more and like them on Facebook - click here.

Les, on Hume Highway M31 with new Flyfaire signs

The NSW Roads and Maritime service recently installed four fabulous highway signs in mid-October, indicating Flyfaire's turn-off on the Hume Highway (Motorway 31 or M31). It is now much easier to find us with the signs clearly indicating the turn-off from the highway.
