Vintage 2016 was a very interesting vintage with three seasons in one - sunshine followed by rain and then more sunshine. This year we had more varieties to add to our offering with Shiraz, Carménère, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon with Riesling and Marsanne still to come. Not a bad season considering the ups and downs of the ripening season.

We had lots of help this year as well including backpackers from Paris and Los Angeles, friends from New Zealand and our work experience student to get the grapes off the vine and into the vats. We also took a video of processing our Cabernet Sauvignon to show you all how the grapes are processed - see below. Read full vintage post here.

Kids' Lunch Boxes Kits Go Viral

Our new kids' lunch kits are a hit with mums and dads (and kids) alike

Our new kids' lunch kits are a hit with mums and dads (and kids) alike

We've been meaning to share this due its popularity with kids visiting Flyfaire and probably because it's even more popular with Mums and Dads! A healthy option for the kids, the little box of goodies includes kid friendly sandwiches, fruit of the day, jelly and a few treats (not too many of course).

This kids' lunch box option has been so popular with Mums and Dads that we needed to get the word out to parents wondering what to do on a day out to the vineyard. So, next time you're out at Flyfaire with the little ones, don't forget to ask for the kids' lunch box kit and everyone will be pleasantly surprised!

Honk Honk the Goose has New Friends

And now, for a little bit of a happy ending story. Honk Honk the lone goose recently got two new friends! He is not so lonesome anymore. Our good family friend Valco brought the two friends out recently and now they're in the process of getting to know each other!

We're looking forward to seeing you this weekend for some Easter fun!

Vintage 2016 @FlyfaireWines

Teddy, the vineyard dog, guarding the Merlot for us

Teddy, the vineyard dog, guarding the Merlot for us

Vintage 2016 was a very mixed bag. A very dry start with no rain in October 2015 followed by mild summer temperatures. The rain started in November and ended with 42mm of rain in one day in February 2016. Just to be different, that was followed by a very dry finish to the season with temperatures in the 40°C’s by the time we got to picking.

We were also kindly offered some Shiraz grapes from Walla Walla by a local farmer and friend. We thought it was the perfect opportunity to introduce Marty, a friend visitng from NZud, to our great Aussie climate. Having come from a balmy 23°C in NZud, he was straight into the 43°C days and picking Shiraz with us.

Luckily, the Pinot Noir that he'd brought with him from Hawkes Bay, NZ washed away the heat and exhaustion from the days of picking quite easily.

The Shiraz we picked in Walla Walla has beautiful blood plum and strawberry nose with a luscious mouth feel, suited to a dry table wine. We think visitors to Flyfaire are going to love this new addition for the 2016 vintage.

With the heat came the unsurprising quick ripening of our grapes at Flyfaire. Our Merlot grapes were the first to come-off the vines at 12 baumé (baumé measures the density of liquids, including our wine!).

The Carménère on the other hand suffered a little heat stress this year. Being young vines, only 2 years since we planted them, this was expected. But we are happy with the crop in the end and the flavours are surprisingly intense.

Chanel, our work experience student, also enjoyed the challenge and added a youth-filled enthusiasm to the job at hand.

Next up, we had a little bit of wild picking to do with our bush Cabernet. And to the rescue came two lovely young backpackers who were up to the challenge: Kristy from Los Angeles and Patrice from Paris. In no time all, the Cabernet was off the vines and ready for processing.

We still have the Riesling and Marsanne to come off the vines. So, we'll be be picking them shortly.

Last, but not least, we also had the help of Teddy the vineyard dog. Thankfully!

Flyfaire Wins Silver at the NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne & Les (Business Director & Winemaker) at the academy awards themed night for the NSW Tourism Awards

Julianne & Les (Business Director & Winemaker) at the academy awards themed night for the NSW Tourism Awards

This past Thursday (Nov. 26th), Julianne and Les, our Business Director and Winemaker, attended the  NSW Tourism Awards in Darling Habour, Sydney. We are delighted to say that we won the Silver Award on the night!

The NSW Tourism Awards are held every year to acknowledge excellence in tourism for all of New South Wales tourism areas.

The team from Flyfaire are thrilled to have made the finals and we were expecting a tough night with high standards of competition. When the results were announced, we were thoroughly thrilled to have won the Silver Award. This is a huge achievement for the team and reflects how far we've come on our journey.

The  NSW Tourism Awards is a fantastic way to develop tourism in the Murray region, as well as for NSW. The awards also helps to recognise independent operators that are providing wonderful tourism experiences.

Margan Wines took the gold award and also entered the Hall of Fame (winners three years running). Hungerford Hill Wines and Bimbadgen Winery (runner-up in 2014) were also great competitors which definitely made the decision tough for the judges on the night in the category Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries. The Greater Hume Shire Visitor Information Centre was also a finalist at the  NSW Tourism Awards, which is in the same area as Flyfaire.

Flyfaire recently won the Gold Award at the Inland Tourism Awards in Broken Hill in July of this year. Read about the post for the Inland Tourism Awards here.

Local Vietnamese children celebrating the moon festival. The charity brought along a small truck load of goodies for these beautiful kids and lots of fun was had by one and all!

Bill McDonald, a local farmer from Mullengandra and patron of Flyfaire Wines, recently went to Vietnam to raise money for a local charity called Only Rice Is Not Enough. Bill and other Albury Rotarians travelled together for the charity event.

Bill and the local Rotarians were asked to bring items of interest from their local community to auction in Vietnam and help raise funds for the charity. Flyfaire donated a bottle of our Riesling for the event which was subsequently auctioned for USD$50 following the story of Flyfaire being told at the auction.

Only Rice Is Not Enough is a local charity in Vietnam whose moto is “A Dime For A Meal to the little kid. Not much, but everyday”. To find out more and like them on Facebook - click here.

Flyfaire Takes the Gold at Inland Tourism Awards

Last July, Julianne and Les, our Business Director and Winemaker, hit the road to attend the Inland Tourism Awards at Broken Hill.

The Inland Tourism Awards are held every year to acknowledge excellence in tourism in the four Victorian and New South Wales regional tourism areas of Central, Inland, Murray and Riverina.

The team from Flyfaire were thrilled to have made the finals and we weren't expecting too much given the stiff competition.

We were totally surprised when the winner was announced and it was Flyfaire's name that was called. Our winemaker had this to say about the win:

“We put a lot of hard work into the submission and we’re delighted that it paid-off in such a big way. It really is such a fabulous surprise and great to be recognised for the hard work that we’ve put into our tourism experience.”
— Les, Flyfaire Winemaker

No rest for the wicked or so they say. Next, we've entered the NSW Tourism Awards with the finalists to be announced mid-October.

Wine Awards: Riesling Challenge, NSW Small Winemakers

Flyfaire 2015 Riesling packed and ready for Canberra Riesling Challenge

Flyfaire 2015 Riesling packed and ready for Canberra Riesling Challenge

We've had two wine competitions on the radar recently, including a bronze winning performance at the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show and entering our latest Riesling in the Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

At the 24th Annual NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show, our winemaker has again had success with our new Flyfaire 2014 "Jane in the Mist" Riesling which received a Bronze in the category "Blended Fortified Wine - Dry to Sweet" with the great score of 48.5 points.

The other wine competition we're participating in is the celebrated Canberra International Riesling Challenge, which attracts wines from Riesling producing countries from all around the world and is seen as one of the most significant events of its type in the southern hemisphere. Having entered the challenge, we will be competing with 500 other Riesling producers from across the world. The results are out Friday the 16th of October, 2015.

Colouring In for Adults and Dine on the Grapewine Event

This coming 29th of October, the Henty Library is hosting an event at Flyfaire where it's time for the adults to colour in (who said colouring in was just for the kids) and enjoy wine tasting at the same time.

The cost is only $5 bucks and it promises to be a social event. Bookings can be make by contacting skane@greaterhume.nsw.gov.au for details or you can always contact us at info@flyfaire.com (we will pass on your details).

NSW Small Winemakers | Flyfaire takes the Bronze

The 24th Annual NSW Small Winemakers Wineshow results are out and Flyfaire has again had success with our new Flyfaire 2014 "Jane in the Mist" Riesling which received a Bronze in the category "Blended Fortified Wine - Dry to Sweet" with the great score of 48.5 points. The class comments noted that it was good to see an interest still exists in fortified wine. Our winemaker created this new style due to customer demand for a sweeter style of wine and it's great to see it has been instantly recognised with this award.

This is our second medal at the NSW Small Winemakers, with last year's awards resulting in a Bronze medal for our Flyfaire 2013 Merlot. That vintage sold out earlier this year and we hope to have the same success with Jane in the Mist.

We missed out on medals with our other wine entries, including:

  • The Flyfaire 2014 Riesling in the category "Class 1 Dry White Table Wine - Riesling any Vintage" with a score of 44.5. We were just 2 points shy of receiving an award for our Flyfaire 2014 Riesling with the class comments noting that the wines had strong Riesling characteristics; and
  • The Flyfaire 2014 Merlot in the category "Class 18 Dry Red Table Wine, Merlot, any Vintage" with a score of 35.

The New South Wales Small Winemakers Show for 2014 held in Forbes, NSW. The competition is open to all vignerons provided they produce wine from no more than 500 tonnes of grapes per annum, not owned or part owned by a larger wine producer, and wines are made from grapes, 85% of which have been grown anywhere within NSW and the ACT. For the full list of results, click here.

Boutique Winemakers of Australia Wine Competition

Flyfaire has entered two vintages in this year's Boutique Wine Awards for which there is just 25 days to go. The wine show was established in 1996 by the Association of Australian Boutique Winemakers in order to give the boutique winemakers the opportunity to win trophies and medals even if they have small quantities of the wine available.

Flyfaire definitely fits the bill as we produce a small quantity of wine compared to larger vineyards. The maximum tonnage for entrants is 250 tons per vineyard; Flyfaire produces in the range of 5-10 tons depending on the year and the season. Vineyards must also be independently owned; Flyfaire is family owned.

There are 17 classes that wines can be entered into, with the competition not specifically judged on vintage or price points. Flyfaire has entered our 2014 Flyfaire Riesling and our 2014 Flyfaire Merlot; both of which are popular with our customers at our cellar door.

Wish us luck for this year's competition and don't forget to leave comments in the section below if you have any questions - we love to hear your feedback!
