Delicious scones are hard to beat, but also difficult to make. We have always wondered how our Nana (from 'On the Road with Nana') managed to make such wonderful scones when we were young. Well, we think this special recipe of Nana's should help all in the kitchen to achieve such fluffy greatness. Don't have time to make scones? Wine Matching Synopsis:

Dreaming of afternoon tea at the Ritz, but don't have the budget.  Well perhaps this is the next best think. Nana's scones are sure to delight and while you are at it, why not put them together with some nice sandwiches and a glass of bubbly. We suggest a Sparkling Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley region to complement the afternoon tea with the date scones. The French oak, cool variety based sparkling will add a perfect dimension to the flavours of the afternoon tea.

Method:

First, chill your bottle of Sparkling Chardonnay in the fridge.

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  • Sift the flour, sugar, salt into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the egg, cream and lemonade into the mixture. Stir until well mixed.
  • Add the chopped dates, mix thoroughly.
  • Shape into scone size squares and place on greased tray.
  • Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until slightly golden.
  • Enjoy with butter, jam and a flute of sparkling chardonnay.

Makes around 12 delicious scones.  Bon appétit!

  • 3 cups Self Raising Flour
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1 tbps of Sugar
  • 1 cup of chopped dates
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 150ml of cream
  • 150ml of lemonade (i.e.: Sprite)
